Dark

We’ve had minimal snowfalls thus far this winter and I can’t say I’m completely bothered. I’d like enough snow to feel the quiet majesty it can bring, especially at dawn when it’s quiet and perhaps still. But the urban detritus that captures the snow after a day or so changes its look in less than pleasant ways.

My morning walks, now starting and finishing before dawn, make shooting hard since it’s been cold and potentially slippery enough to preclude taking my camera. I’m reliant on my phone and I’m fine with that. My biggest problem is that it’s small and thus harder to hold for 4 second exposures – shaky hands for several reasons.

So, rather than shooting, I’ve been relying on my memory to notice the bewildering gradations of black and grey in the almost-dawn, now highlighted with just a pinch of snow. Sometimes if the light is right, I’ll try a shot. Sometimes it works. Luckily, I’m pleased with some of the images that never make it to the camera. They are harder to share but perhaps of greater value because of that.
