Reflection, Phipps Conservatory, Pittsburgh, 2016

The water was calm although there was a slight breeze, enough to ruffle the reflection of the ironwork in the water. I’m always attracted to reflections, in part because they seem to tell me something deep and certainly unexpected about what I’m looking at. This reflected structure, impressive in its solidity when seen straight on, is transformed by its fluidity in the water. Its proximity to lily pads softens it even further in this view. We are asked to see it dance, as it gently contradicts this solidity, if only in water.

What a blessing to be reminded that solid and unyielding need not always be such unchanging categories. Of course the iron won’t sway with the wind, we wouldn’t want it to. Yet somehow, being reminded that the most rigid structure can dance under certain circumstances can bring a smile. And that may well be all I need to move on!
